Try the DIY Banana Method

One of the more unexpected DIY handbag deodorizing tricks involves using a banana. This is the method I used to get rid of a very bad odor from a vintage 1992 Louis Vuitton I found in storage. Surprisingly, it was the method that worked!

Bananas naturally release moisture and mild enzymes as they ripen, which may help neutralize stale odors trapped in vintage handbag linings. While this method is not a cure for severe mold or mildew, many vintage collectors use it to help remove lingering “old closet” smells from handbags.

How to Try the Banana Method

1. Place the handbag inside a large sealed container or garment bag. I used a garbage bag.
2. Place a whole banana inside the sealed space beside the handbag — not directly touching the bag. I placed the banana directly inside the bag, but I would recommend being more careful!
3. Seal the container and leave it for 24–48 hours.
4. Remove the banana immediately afterward and air out the handbag thoroughly.

Many people notice the musty odor softens significantly after one treatment. For my Louis Vuitton storage find, I had to do it two times.

Important Tips Before Trying This Method

• Avoid this method for suede or extremely delicate materials
• Do not leave the banana too long, or it may over-ripen and create another odor
• Always air out the bag afterward
• Check the banana to ensure it's not getting black or mushy. If it is, take it out.

For best results, follow the banana treatment with baking soda, activated charcoal, or fresh airflow.

This Louis Vuitton Speedy bag was a storage find of mine, and it smelled very musty. Using the banana trick two times eliminated 90%+ of the odor.

Use Activated Charcoal for Lingering Odors

Activated charcoal works especially well for stubborn handbag odors because it helps absorb moisture and odor particles without adding fragrance or chemicals.

Place charcoal odor absorbers, such as the Moso Natural Air Purifying Bags with premium bamboo charcoal, inside the purse for several days to help remove lingering odors from the leather and fabric interiors.

Silica gel packets can also help reduce trapped moisture inside stored handbags.

Clean Leather Carefully
